Birds Control Information :
|
Birds are responsible for millions of dollars worth of damage to automobiles, buildings, machinery, paint finishes and signage every year. Bird droppings cause significant damage to building materials if left to settle. The uric acid in bird feces eats through paint on surfaces and metal pipes and conduit. Canvas awnings typically need to be replaced after six months to a year, as even cleaning cannot repair the damage caused. When stonework gets covered in bird droppings, the uric acid in those droppings will eat the finish off of the stone, exposing the porous inside. Water can then seep in, which during the freeze – thaw process of the winter can cause that irreplaceable stone to crack. Often workers will protest and refuse to work on equipment that has been exposed to the hazardous waste

Problems of Bird Infestation:
1. Property Damage- Bird droppings deface and slowly damage the surfaces of buildings, monuments, statues ets. This is caused mainly by the acidic secretions of fungi that live within the droppings and their corrosive effect. The longer bird infestation remains, the more expensive will become the removal of droppings from roosting and nesting areas. Ultimately costly restoration becomes necessary; for example, repairing masonry, repainting, sanding of surfaces, replacement of corroded fittings, etc. Birds roosting or nesting in builings are normally a seasonal problem.
2. Product and Packaging Damage- Droppings in factories, warehouses and under loading bays will permanently damage products and packaging and birds will peck holes in insulation to make nests. Workers dislike handling cartons with wet/dry droppings and loose insulation can be hazardous to health and expensive to replace. In aircraft hangers, automotive assembly areas, railway and tramway assembly/ maintenance areas, droppings will mark and etch metal and painted surfaces, often permanently.
3. Footpaths, Entrances, Fire Escapes- Bird droppings on footpaths, stairs and entrances are harardous as people may slip. Fire escapes are infrequently used, so provide quiet areas for pigeons and doves. It is quite common to find severe infestation, odours, insects and bacteria in these areas and particles can enter the air conditioning system to infect staff and customers, block filters, accumulate in ductwork, etc.

Disease :
Birds are the cause of many diseases of humans and domestic animals. Infact more than 60 transmittable diseases are associated with pegions, starlings and sparrows.
1. Histoplasmosis (fungus disease) - This is a respiratory disease and can infect humans and domestic pets such as dogs and cats. Histoplasmosis originates from a fungus, which lives in dry bird droppings (pigeon and starling). Serious infections in humans are seen as high fevers, blood abnormalities, blindness and even death.
2. Psittacosis, also called Ornithosis - An infectious illness caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. It is characterised by respiratory pneumonia- like symptoms and transmitted to humans by infected birds, especially parrots.
3. Cryptococcosis (fungus disease) - This is caused by a yeast found in the intestinal tract of pigeons. the disease often begins as a pulmonary infection which can spread to the nervous system.
4. Salmonellosis (bacterium) - Often occurs as food poisoning and the bacteria can be found in droppings. Infection can be spread by dried droppings circulated by fans, air conditioning etc. thereby contaminating products, packaging, surfaces or food preparation areas, etc.
5. Odours, Insects, Noise - Accumulating and decaying bird droppings create offensive odours and attract a wide variety of flies and other disease carrying insects. The high-pitched noise of birds are of annoyance to people and particularly so to hospital patients, the elderly and others who need rest and peace.
6. Blocked Gutters - Old nests, nest materials, dead birds and discarded food from bird nesting and roosting areas can block gutters and drains. In winter, water overflow can cause serious damage to ceilings and accumulated waste assists rusting. Wooden structures will decay, plaster and rendering face accelerated deterioration and awnings rot.
7. Ectoparasites - Fleas, ticks and mites may bite humans. They frequently invade homes and offices from nests in and around buildings.

Bird Management :
Birds appear to be "innocent" yet they can be so very destructive. Management methods can affect your business unless sensitively and competently chosen and implemented. the major forms of management are required in domestic, manufacturing, food storage industries, public assembly areas and urban areas where there are usually high human populations.
|
|
Bird Control Various methods are :
1. Proofing - Close up any gaps in your roof or other entry points to your home. Under roof tiles, the roof "valley", drain pipes, chimneys and vents are all vulnerable to bird entry.
2. Exclusion Netting - Purpose- built urban netting is used to enclose areas from birds- creating a harmless impenetrable Barrier. Non-corrosive stainless steel fixings and cables form the framework to which the netting is attached. Netting comes in sizes suitable for all species of birds.
3. Post and Wire - This system is applied to horizontal surfaces such as windowsills, cornices and ledges. Suitable only for pigeons and silver gulls.
4. Spikes and Coils - These anti-nesting, anti-roosting systems are assembled ready for fixing to narrow ledges. They are constructed entirely of stainless steel, stainless steel into plastic bases, aluminium or plastic. Ideal for areas where surface drilling is not an option as they can be fixed with silicone or a suitable epoxy resin.
5. Trapping - Humane trapping can be very effective in reducing pigeon populations. Pre-baiting is essential for successful trapping. This method is not recommended for other species. Sparrow traps are also available.
6. Repellent Gel - Bird repellents can be divided into categories: -Olfactory(odour) -Tactile(touch) eg: Polybutane gel products, aromatic solvents -Gustatory(taste) eg: Fungicides for seed dressing, turpentine -Grease: High temperature bearing grease can be used on roof entry points as a deterrent for roof dwellers. Of these , polybutane gels are NRA approved and registered for use.
7. Baits - Baits depresses or stimulates central nervous system.Suitable for managing large number of birds and is economically effective.
